Karachi: IBA has launched its first Journalism Society. The launch event was organized at the Center for Entrepreneurial Development in IBA on 21st October 2019.
The event was organized by the IBA Journalism Society members and students of Masters in Journalism program at Center for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ).
Prominent journalists Mubashir Zaidi and Zarrar Khuhro shared their insights on the future of journalism in the digital age.
Speakers spoke about the challenges and transitions of traditional media to the digital medium and the influence of social media on news/ challenges on the credibility of news.
The discussion was moderated by MSJ students. The panelists were asked about the content policy of Facebook as the information run through the platform is correct or fake Khuhro said that Facebook does not remove the fake news "it's their business model, Facebook earn money from this, they need likes and shares," he said.
"The public at large needs to understand how to use social media in a constructive way," he added.
Zaidi advised the aspiring journalist to work with dedication. He said, "it's not a 9-5 job. It's a 24 hour on the duty job as you look for stories. being a journalist you go out and meet people as much as you can to find out stories. Work hard as much as you can and create your own niche."
Khuhro commented on the same question that journalist's personal opinions don't matter. Their job is to observe and report facts. This job is unglamorous and there is lot of hard work.
This session served well the purpose of discussing and debating the various aspects of digital social platforms that are playing an increasing role in the dissemination of news. Every major breakthrough in technology has unforeseeable consequences and social media is no exception.
