The aura initially didn't seem all that intense considering this was a political event. The participants buzzed with excitement as they cued up to pick up their cards. As the clock approached 10 a video displaying the election news welcomed the participants. A moments silence also took place in honor for the Peshawar massacre victims. The anthem that has been synonymous with the killings played in the background as I had shivers running down my spine.
Soon the proceedings were handed over to the day champ Sumrah Ahmed. An enthusiastic demeanor, a bubbly personality and a habit of asking things to be spoken louder, she started off by showing a few video clips and a question answer session that got the participants warmed up.
The Prime Minister Syed Muhammad Hamza and the common voice Anas Yousuf delivered their speeches. Later on our participants were divided among different factions and they were sent out of the auditorium where their respective cluster facilitators joined them to brief about their objectives.
The sun wasn't showing mercy but to the awaam's credit they took to the streets and, to the dismay of pro-government citizens, assembled in huge numbers for a dharna. Slogans began exchanging and to fuel the chaos our beloved media jumped in. These news hunting parasites rather did their jobs commendably.
As Dharna picked up pace and volume, my coffee unusually was sprayed upon with water. When I looked up a barrage of what I was told were rangers, stormed the Shaamyana Chowk. They sprayed the unsuspecting protesters with water and the crowd dispersed immediately. These pro government rangers then secured the area and did not let the opposition leader take center stage again.
All the participants were then assembled back in the auditorium. Prominent parliament and MQM representative Mr. Haider Abbas Rizvi came on as the events first in a series of guest speakers. His speech began on explaining the need and the quality of politics. He talked about the personas of politicians and how they are perceived. He stressed that politics cannot be replaced but politicians can be. That is the only way towards bringing a change. Here he quoted the example of his own party. How his party has such a minimal share of seats in the senate yet how they have been able to create a big enough stir that have led to change.
After lunch we were then joined by media personality Mr. Waseem Badami who took the podium to discuss the media's role within the Pakistani society. He opinioned that blaming the media as the root cause of societal problem is a trend now. He also suggested the media's role has been rather positive in recent years contrary to popular belief.
He termed the dharnas in Islamabad as not just a bad example of media reporting, but indeed the worst in recent times.
He highlighted how two production houses took sides and jumped towards biased reporting where people were befuddled whether there were 200 people or 2 lakh at the gathering.
Day 3 entailed loads of fun and let the participants socialize at the breathtaking location of Dream World Resorts. To their credit, the participants didn't let the chilly weather affect their enjoyment.
The Politik'15 Day 4 promised a lot. One of the promises that did end up being fulfilled was the presence of another MQM juggernaut Mr. Farooq Sattar. He wanted to inquire the state of mind the youth has. For this purpose he assured that he has left MQM and all associations outside the premises of the IBA campus. "Im here to share my experience and answer your concerns. I may have opted for wrong policies and thus the reason to come here is to guide you to not repeat these mistakes.
He exited on a moving scenario. "I would love to see a farmer's daughter in the lands of Benazir Bhutto or the son of a Chartered Accountant in Punjab being the next Prime Minister. That to me will be the real change in Pakistan.
Along with a dose of Urdu poetry, the session proved to be the cherry on the top of such a politically informative event.
In all honesty, the four day political event was far from political in any way. Unlike in reality the event far surpassed expectations and fulfilled the promises it had made. The enriching guest speakers and simulation of elections, dharnas and parliament sessions painted a scenario that the youth were well and ready to serve the country if need be. Once the activities were over, one thing was assured, that the future of such initiatives as The Politik '15 and the country seemed more than promising.
